I was decorating our tree this morning, and remembering...

One year a long time ago, we had very little money for Christmas. That was normal for a country family with 5 kids.

But this year I had wanted doll clothes. I knew we had no money and I wouldn't get them, but I wanted store-bought clothes.

I woke up Christmas morning, and all over the tree were hung dozens of little clothes - my Mom had knit little caps and scarves out of scraps, sewn fancy little dresses, delicate petticoats out of doilies, even made jewelry!

It turned out she had been working for weeks to get them made and hidden so I wouldn't find them.

As I hung a little red-and-green cap and scarf on the tree this morning, I remembered that year...
